"Where words leave off, music begins"

Welcome to Dhwani, an initiative to spread the musical knowledge I have gained through the years. Here you will find information about Indian classical music, particularly Carnatic classical music and about my effort to teach Indian music away from India. Read on to know more about my initiative.

Carnatic music lessons

photo of Dhwani music lessonsI offer beginners' Carnatic classical music classes for children above the age of 4 and adults. Each class consists of a group of 2-4 children or adults of similar age groups. Each class is of a duration of 45 minutes. Course materials are provided and classes are recorded for practice and review. You can know more about carnatic music here.

Light music classes

I also offer light music classes that include bhajans and Indian film music for adults who want to learn music for fun and do not have the time and inclination to learn classical music.

Music meet-up

photo of Dhwani's music meetup groupI conduct bi-monthly music meet ups where music lovers get together. We get to spend some time, usually Sunday afternoons, discussing music, planning performances and of course singing together. Each meetup is theme based and is different everytime. We are a bunch of enthusiastic music lovers. To know more and join us, you can get in touch with me here.

Why learn classical music?

I am often asked - why learn classical music? What is the real advantage of learning such a complicated form of music? Can we not learn to sing by singing popular songs or film songs? Yes, we can definitely learn the songs and maybe replicate them to an extent. But to capture the finesse and essence of any kind of music, some knowledge of classical music is essential.

The best part about learning music is that you can take it as seriously or as casually as you like. It is a rewarding experience, no matter how deep or shallow the involvement. Classical music can have a calming influence on children and adults alike. So one could say, learning music contributes to the holistic development of an individual. There are several advantages to learning music.

  • Music helps in concentration and fastens thinking speed
  • Playing a musical instrument or learning to sing helps develop a child's creative thinking and motor skills
  • Music helps one become more active listeners
  • Children who sing or play music learn there are rewards from hard work, practice and discipline
  • Children who study music from an early age can do better at a range of subjects
  • Ears became more and more sensitive to pitch. It helps gain Swaragyaanam - the knack to detect even a tiny off note
  • It makes it easier to sing non-classical songs too. If one can figure out the notes, that's a great help to remembering/ reproducing any tune
